Perimenopause can often feel like an upward climb. It is repeatedly misunderstood with many women not even realising they’re in this phase til they start having changes in their menstrual cycle. But Perimenopause is so much more than that. In fact, Perimenopause is often identified by the mental and emotional changes brought on by fluctuating hormones, often long before any physical symptoms occur. Increased stress, anxiety, feelings of overwhelm and lack of confidence and self esteem. Sound familiar?
It can be a confusing time for many women (myself included) so I wanted to share 3 things that I’ve learnt so far that might surprise you.
3 things I’ve learnt in my Perimenopause journey so far
1. Mental health matters – I’ve realised that when my mental health suffers (stressed out, feeling more anxious & second guessing myself) everything else suffers as well. Without strong mental resilience I’m not functioning at my best and don’t have the energy to do what I know will support me. Exercise and daily hypnosis have helped me enormously.
2.The importance of rest – both mentally and physically. Rest is highly underrated in supporting us to function optimally daily but so often at the bottom of our lists in prioritising. I’m learning to listen to my body (& mind) and notice the queues when I need to slow down, rest or go to bed early. Daily meditation (I highly recommend the 1Giantmind app) and creating a consistent sleep routine have been my go to’s to support me in this space.
3. There’s no silver bullet fix – Despite what social media will tell you, there’s not one single pill, diet, training program or supplement that will make you feel better and magically make all your symptoms disappear. Rather it takes a holistic approach.Find what works for you and do that. Every woman’s Perimenopause journey is different and with 34 known symptoms it makes sense that you need a multifaceted approach to managing symptoms.
How Hypnotherapy can support you during Perimenopause
Hypnotherapy is a mind-body therapy, similar to mindfulness and guided imagery, that involves the focus of attention, a relaxed state and therapeutic suggestions to bring about positive change.
From reducing hot flashes and anxiety levels to boosting self esteem and getting better sleep, hypnotherapy (especially when combined with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) can help alleviate symptoms and bring about positive change that lasts leaving you feeling relaxed and empowered.
Even better, because Hypnotherapy is natural and non invasive, it can be combined safely with HRT, that’s why I think it should be added to every woman’s (peri)menopause toolboox.
